My parents impressed on me the values
that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and
you do what you say and keep your promise, that you treat people with respect.
They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily life. Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous
States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious
apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end,
we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight
with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our
Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight
on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we
shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender. Four score and seven years ago
our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in
liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have
been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but
kindness and encouragement from you fans. I want to have time to look for my
children, and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among
the dead. Hear me, my Chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where
the sun now stands I will fight no more forever. And so, my fellow
Americans: ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for
your country. We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them,
this morning, as they prepared for the journey and waved goodbye and “slipped
the surly bonds of earth” to “touch the face of God.” 'Cause the
players gonna play, play, play, play, play. And the haters gonna hate,
hate, hate, hate, hate. Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake,
shake. I shake it off, I shake it off. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall! I still remember
the refrain of one of the most popular barrack ballads of that day which
proclaimed most proudly that “old soldiers never die; they just fade away.”
Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me
liberty, or give me death! Blessed are they which are persecuted for
righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. I have
a dream today. Excuse me
while I kiss the sky.
